Some potentially useful updates

Hi, I’m Vegan viewers, friends, and fans. I have some new tools at your disposal.

You and those you know can now subscribe to I’m Vegan via iTunes, through which you can download the h.264 1080p MPEG-4 files used as masters at the blip.tv site (one of the other hosts I’m using for propagating the series). These files will download as podcasts, then you can locate them on your computer through iTunes (right-click or ctrl-click on the episode to bring up a menu, then chose “Show in Finder”). Remember that you are not permitted to modify the profiles, but you might find it useful to download them for use instead of relying on embedding. For instance, you can save the files to a DVD to pass on to others or to show people in a kiosk or classroom.

Due to a technical glitch, it may take some time for I’m Vegan: Regina to show up in the list.

Also, note that the home page has changed a little for the sake of simplicity. However, it may not be obvious that you use the arrows located to the right and left of the main video to navigate to other video profiles currently available in I’m Vegan’s YouTube channel.

Finally, below the video I have added some information on veganism. For those non-vegans you send these videos or talk to about this project (or really anyone you want to look into veganism further), you can refer to them to the home page at vegandocumentary.com for an introduction to the whys and hows of veganism.

I hope you find these features useful!

First profiles uploading to YouTube now

It’ll be several hours before the first documentary videos are (finally!) ready for viewing, but they are uploading to YouTube as I write this. You can watch them there, on the Videos page here, or even on the home page, but I also will blog about them individually to make sure blog subscribers are notified when the videos are ready to view.

The first five profilees are:

Long overdue update

I have to keep this quick, since it’s pretty late, and I have to be up at 6am.

Editing on I’m Vegan has been on hold for a couple of months due to a restaurant I am working to open here in Boston. More details on Peace o’ Pie Gourmet Vegan Pizza at our home page, our Twitter feed, and our Facebook page, with more information to come in the next week. I hope to be back to editing before too much longer.

Thanks for your patience!

Editing under way

Hi, all. This is just a quick update from the “editorial suite” to let you know that, now that my broken wrist has sufficiently mended, editing has finally begun.

Today I finished a rough cut of the first profile to be edited. It’s nice to see the footage come together at roughly the length I was hoping for and to see it cut together pretty well (not too much hair-pulling so far). I’m looking forward to watching it again in a couple of days or so to polish it up and do all the audio work that still needs to be done (editing, mixing, etc.).

In the meantime I’ll start on another profile. I’d like to have a few done before going live with the videos, which means it will be at least another month before I post the first batch, so stay tuned!

More photos and a note about I’m Vegan merch

You’ll notice that the site’s Merch link has been pulled for the time-being. I’ve heard from some of you who want to wear I’m Vegan apparel, and I look forward to providing that for you! However, I’ve been made aware of a business similar to CafePress that appears to make more of an effort to produce and source its products more sustainably and ethically than CafePress, so I want switch the store over to that service when I have time to resolve technical concerns and to build a new storefront (which may be a while).

In the meantime, here are some more pictures from our shoot, mainly DC and FL:

Final pre-production vlog

I recorded this quick, 2-minute update at coffee shop while my wife was running a 5k, so apologies for the noise. It’s still pretty audible, and there’s some news updates you may want to know about, so check it out:

PS – Please email me any questions you want the interviewees to answer (eric AT vegandocumentary DOT com).

Casting notifications have started going out

FYI, I started sending out casting confirmations to ‘selectees’ today, but it was slower going than I had anticipated. I’m sharing this news for those of you who are following updates to find out whether or not you’ve been cast. I had hoped to send all the notices out before the end of the day, but now it looks like I won’t be able to finish doing so until late Monday or Tuesday (this weekend is pretty much devoted to Boston Vegan Association projects).

Which reminds me: if you are in the New England area, the reason you haven’t heard anything back yet is because I am not planning to include N.E. in this road trip. It’s already a long haul to a lot of locations, and I figure we can shoot the N.E. profiles after we’ve returned to Boston and had a chance to recharge our batteries. I’ll email “local” applicants directly once I’ve finished planning this first big trip.

Thanks all for your patience, and for your interest in I’m Vegan!

Casting update/reminder

Hi, all.

If you’re one of the people who was contacted for a second round of casting but have not yet heard back, realize that I am going through the submissions daily. I have received quite a few and, as you know, they are somewhat lengthy. I’m also balancing the submissions against the need to plan a reasonable itinerary, amongst other variables, so this is a bit more time-consuming than just picking any stand-out submissions.

I promise to make an announcement here once the final cut is made. At that point, everyone who is going to be profiled will have been notified and anyone who has not been notified as of that announcement will know they were not selected. I do wish I could meet more of you than I’ll be able to meet. Please know that even if you are not selected, your submission was strongly considered and caused me much deliberation!

vegandocumentary.com re-launched!

The day is finally here: vegandocumentary.com has been re-launched as the official home of the I’m Vegan documentary project! Special thanks to Wyatt Greene for handling all my various requests and for putting in all the hours that made this site possible.

You’ll notice as you click around that we still have some features to roll out, but go ahead and kick the tires—catch up on our publicity, follow the project on Twitter, and all that good stuff. Those of you following the project elsewhere may noticed that I took a few minutes to update the blog settings at the I’m Vegan Facebook fan page, which will import blog posts from the revamped site via RSS, and that I did the same for the FeedBlitz email list. Email subscribers will now find the latest I’m Vegan blogs and vlogs delivered directly to their inbox! (for those of you who know what to do with it, our RSS feed is here)

So, hopefully I did all that right, and the few hundred of you that are subscribed via email orwho are fans at Facebook will receive this notice and watch the welcome vlog I recorded for our home page a little over a week ago, before the re-launch was delayed due to Internet Explorer not playing nice with our design. I didn’t have time to record a new vlog, so some of this may seem a little off, but I wanted to get the news out ASAP. Without further ado:

FYI, in case you don’t watch the video, I wanted to make sure you knew that the open casting period is now over. I am now knee-deep in choosing who I will meet for the project. I’ll be back once that has been accomplished, so stay tuned!
